Tips and Tricks to Surviving Don't Starve Gathered from Fellow Gamers:
1. Explore the World! Don't settle down where you spawn. Explore the different biomes and structures and find one that may help you survive longer. Pig villages are especially helpful when you can enlist the help of the pigman to gather resources or help fight hostile mobs. As you are wandering, be sure to pick up all the resources you can. Don't worry about creating a campfire, just be sure you have the resources to make torches and use those until you find the right spot.
2. Gather resources! This is basically the most important and constant thing you need to do throughout the game. As you play more and more, things will get harder and harder, and you need to have enough resources to continue to survive and advance.
3. See Tip #2 and repeat!
4. Once you have your base, a fire pit is what you want to build to keep the fires burning at night. Unlike a campfire, a fire pit can be started with twigs, or anything that can be used as fuel should you run out of logs. Start to make the basic items that will help you to survive. Make traps to catch rabbits, frogs and even spiders. It will be important at the beginning to stock up on food as much as you can. Beware though! Food can spoil! In order to make food last longer, you will want to make drying racks where you can dry meat. As long as the meat is hanging on the rack, it will not spoil. So make as many racks as you can. Do build a few chests. You will need them to store excess items that you collect for the coming seasons. As soon as you can, build an Science Machine and an Alchemy engine so you can craft the more advance items you will be needing, like iceboxes and crock pots.
5. Start to dig up and gather resources to plant closer to your base such as saplings, berry bushes, grass and trees. Don't plant them to close to your base or they may catch on fire and destroy everything you have! Plant them in straight long rows so you can gather the resources quicker and plant them with a bit of space between them so one row doesn't catch the other on fire should that happen.
6. Start to build up your base with more of everything! More farms, more drying racks, more iceboxes, more crock pots, etc. With crock pots, you can make meals that give you more hunger, health and sanity points.
7. Get ready for the Hounds to attack! You will hear them barking before you see them. If you are in a pig village, feed the pig men meat (monster preferably) to enlist their help to fight. If you are near spiders, get ready to drag the hounds to them so they will take care of the hounds for you. You get the idea! You need help! Enlist whatever mob you can. Once you get hounds teeth from killing hounds, you can build tooth traps to do the work for you. You can even build special structures lined with tooth traps to snare those pesky hounds! If you find a Lure Plant, you can harvest it and bring it back to your base as a trap as well.
8. Build yourself a bird trap, catch a bird then build a bird cage as soon as you can. A caged bird can refresh nearly spoiled food such as eggs and seeds, to get new eggs and seeds the birds drop. If you feed dragon fruit to a bird, he will drop dragon fruit seeds, and you can plant those in your gardens to guarantee the grow of more dragon fruit so you can make dragon pie.
